Wax printing (“ran” in Chinese) is a very old technique generally associated with the indigo color that comes from dyeing the leaves of the Indigo plant, harvested in mid-October. The molten wax is applied to the fabric in hand-drawn patterns, which is therefore not as precise as a conventional printing method. Then the fabric is dyed with indigo in cold water. Once the dyed fabric has dried, it is washed in hot water to melt the wax and reveal the design and the more or less deep indigo blue.
